The science of Earth resilience on a planetary scale

Today’s decisions for a sustainable future require a step-change in scientific understanding of Earth Resilience and its dynamic boundaries.

The global environment is changing at ever greater pace and magnitude, presenting today’s societies with unprecedented sustainability challenges. Resilience has proven to be a powerful concept for sustainability decision-making by helping people to deal with change and complexity in many diverse social, ecological and technological systems. Scientists are now systematically investigating the resilience of the whole Earth system, developing an understanding of Earth Resilience. Fundamentally, resilience is the capacity of a system to withstand perturbations, and retain its structure and function through adaptation and transformation. Now, human-driven global change and complex Earth system interactions necessitate that the resilience concept extends to the scale of planetary systems.

This symposium showcases scientific efforts to characterize, analyze and work with Earth Resilience. The high-level speakers and panelists share their insights and concerns about today’s changing world. Offering their perspectives from science, policy, business and wider society, they will discuss the challenges, new opportunities, and societal transformations needed to establish a sustainable world informed by an understanding of Earth Resilience.

This event is part of the Earth Resilience in the Anthropocene project, supported by the European Research Council (ERC-2016-ADG 743080), led by Stockholm Resilience Centre (SRC), Stockholm University and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK).

Registration: Due to the limited availability of seats, early registration is strongly recommended to ensure your participation.
